Listening to The Velvet Underground opens you up to a lot of good music; not just from the band itself, but also from the solo careers of each former member. Lou Reed went on to the most fame, whereas John Cale was always more in the shadows. An acquired taste. I always liked John Cale solo; from radically avant garde manic messes to soft spoken classical.
Vintage Violence was John's debut album. It is currently one of two of his albums in my collection, the other being "Fragments of a Rainy Season" (which I bought on a complete whim as to what it was). It kick ass, plain and simple. Very peaceful, innocent, angelic, and comely. Perhaps a little naive and simple, but it was his first album.
"Amsterdam" was always my favorite track, to the point where I learned it on guitar (it doesn't sound exactly like it does on the album, but it's really just the two chords Cmaj7 and Fmaj7), but I also love "Gideon's Bible", "Big White Cloud", and "Wall". I prefer the Le Bataclan '72 reunion show w/ Lou and Nico version of "Ghost Story", however.
