Stefan Kudelski was known to the audio profession for inventing
the ‘Nagra’ tape recorder. He died in Switzerland on January 26, 2013, at the
age of 83. The Nagra (translating to “will record” in Polish) set an industry
standard for audio recording in television and film. His invention was the
first portable recording device that could be carried around a movie set by
only one person. The weighed in between 8 and 20 pounds depending on the how
many accessories were used. Randy Thom, director of sound design at Skywalker
